A blue course: a steeper hill and changes of rhythm that ask you to look a gate ahead.
Slalom is the tightest, quickest event: short turns round poles set close together. Your speed comes from the spring of a clean edge change, not from tucking, so a tuck between turns only throws it away. Where gates stack straight down the hill (a hairpin or a flush), it’s one quick turn per pole.
How to ski Classic
- Start to split 1 (gates 1–7)
- An even slalom rhythm.
- Split 1 to split 2 (gates 8–13)
- A delay at gate 8, ice between gates 10 and 11.
- Split 2 to split 3 (gates 14–18)
- A hairpin at gates 14–16, ice between gates 17 and 18.
- Split 3 to the finish (gates 19–26)
- A flush at gates 20–23.
- Combinations: come in over the top, then one quick turn per pole.
- Delays: the gate sits far to the side, so turn early and high to carry your speed round.
- Ice: finish the turn before it and glide across flat.
The Course Setter skis it in 27.87 s, topping 34 mph (54 km/h).
