Super-G in CarveMania
In CarveMania, super-G is about the line: take a high line into the big turns so you’re not braking at the pole, then tuck through the glides. The Course Setter tops 79 mph on Cornice.
What is super-G?
Super-G, short for super giant slalom, is the younger of the two speed events: it joined the World Cup in the 1982–83 season and the Olympics in 1988. It mixes downhill speed with giant slalom turns, on a long, fast course with the gates set far apart, raced in a single run.
There are no training runs. Racers inspect the course on the morning of the race, slipping down it beside the gates, then race it: the first time they ski the line is at race speed.
Super-G rules
- One run; the fastest time wins.
- No training runs: course inspection only.
- Men’s World Cup courses drop 350–650 m (350–600 m for women).
- Turning poles of successive gates are at least 25 m apart.
What’s the difference between super-G and downhill?
Downhill is longer and faster, with fewer turns, bigger jumps and training runs on the days before the race. Super-G has more gates and more turning, a shorter course and no training runs. Both are one-run speed events: super-G averages about 53 mph (86 km/h) in men’s World Cup races, downhill about 60 mph (96 km/h).
